Vanessa Pinto Carvalho da Silva

Doutoranda em Sociologia

Graduated in Sociology (2005), I had my master's in Sociology in 2015 (ISCTE-IUL) and I’m a Ph.D. student at ISCTE-IUL since 2015/2016. Invited Assistant Teacher at Higher Education School, Santarém since 2018, teaching research methods and techniques in social sciences.

With relevant professional experience in the field of adult education and training, the research areas have been designed around adults with little education in Portugal.

In the Ph.D. the research that has been developed aims to deepen a phenomenon studied in the Master's thesis, around low educated adults who haven't resumed formal education. In order to map the phenomenon, focusing on these adults a look capable of capturing their dispositions, characterizing their contexts and knowing their reflections, we hope to find answers on the reasons that have kept these adults out of formal education, understanding its relationship with other forms of learning.

BIO

Graduated in Sociology (2005), I had my master in Sociology in 2015 (ISCTE-IUL) and I’m a PhD student since 2015/2016.

My PhD research aims to be a profound look upon adult’s with low qualifications, that didn’t return to formal education, and is called ‘Staying out:  Contexts, Processes, Dispositions and Reflexiveness of low educated adults, that didn’t return to formal education’.

My work experience started in 2006 as a senior technician at Dianova Portugal Association – Specialized in Drug Addiction and Social Development. In 2007 I’ had a Post-graduation in Human Resource Management (ISLA), which lead me to a consulting work experience, where I had my first contact with training and non-formal education. After that experience I went to learn how to be a trainer, and in 2008 I started to work at CENFIM (Vocational Training Centre of the Metal Industry), a national protocolized centre which promotes professional guidance and improvement in the metallurgical, metallomechanical and electromechanical sectors. After that I had also worked with IEFP, and other Professional Schools (ESCO, EPAFBL) or training projects (CM Lourinhã, CM Torres Vedras).

From 2008 until 2015 I' ve worked with adult’s and Young people in education and training (from 15 to 65 years). During that time, I was an adult trainer (formal and non-formal education), I’ had coordinated teams and a psychopedagogical support office, and I’ had performance many other functions associated at the ANQ initiative ‘Novas Oportunidades’ (RVCC Professional, Coordinator of the CNO office, trainer at Adult education and training (EFA), Coordinator of EFA classes/groups, etc.).

Since 2015 I’m a PhD student in ISCTE-IUL and a Consultant in projects upon professional associations and adult education, developing Training References upon adult formal professional education (upper secondary), and counselling upon professional regulation.

In 2017 and 2018 I had collaborated with CIES (Centro de Investigação e Estudos em Sociologia) during two evaluation programmes (FCT).

I've also been a volunteer at Rede Educação Viva, Núcleo de Torres Vedras since 2017.
