The proposal to reflect on the present time, based on the theme of polarized societies, defies this Thematic Section (ST, Secção Temática) to put on the research agenda unavoidable and urgent challenges. The COVID-19 Pandemic is a clear example in this context, namely because it triggered undeniably transformative effects in the way different knowledges, sciences and societies came to relate to each other. Also inseparable from this line of reflection have been the transformations and the impact of the digital in contemporary societies.

Within this framework, the present call challenges sociologists as well as other social scientists to present their work on the following topics:

  1. governance of the digital world and (dis)information;
  2. digital revolution, new forms of communication in contemporary societies: potentialities and challenges;
  3. digital technologies and their impacts on the various dimensions of social life: between face-to-face and remote, online, offline and hybrid models;
  4. (new) configurations between science, technology and uncertainty in current risk societies;
  5. art(s), science and technology;
  6. cybersecurity: threats, challenges and behaviours;
  7. technology, science and democracy.

The ST “Knowledge, Science and Technology” invites, therefore, the submission of works (posters or papers) in these topics, although they do not exhaust the possibilities of framing research work in this call. Other proposals may be submitted, focusing on other topics, as long as they dialogue with the scientific domain of this thematic section.

As in previous editions of the Congress, best communications may be proposed for publication in the journal SOCIOLOGIA ON LINE
